The Frog Fair

In Vittel, they’re celebrating the Reinette apple… and much more besides

A tribute to the frog… Whether cooked or not

Every year in Vittel, between April and May, the Frog Fair takes place. Over the course of a weekend, guilds, frog lovers and fans of French cuisine gather in the streets of Vittel, which are decked out in green in honour of the little amphibian. A funfair and a market are also on the programme, much to the delight of children… and their parents.

A weekend in the countryside

We’ve come to Vittel for one reason and one reason only: the Frog Fair, which takes place every spring… and it’s this weekend. Armed with our legs, we wander amongst the food stalls, the funfair and the market. This event is also an opportunity to pay tribute to the little amphibians, and above all to the Reinette apple.

There’s even a guild in the town: the ‘Taste-Cuisses de Grenouille’ (Frog Leg Tasters’ Guild). It’s actually this guild that organises the event over the weekend.

Three news items

The Foire aux Grenouilles has been running since 1972. In 2022, the fair therefore celebrated its 50th anniversary.

The Frog Fair takes place every year in the spring. It’s an event not to be missed, attracting thousands of visitors to the spa town.

The founder of the Frog Fair is none other than René Hoffstetter, a restaurateur and a prominent member of the Confrérie des Tastes Cuisses de Grenouille.

Frogs… So highly revered

The Frog Fair is an opportunity not only to sample the famous frog’s legs, but also to meet the members of the Brotherhood. You can’t miss them in the crowd: they’re dressed all in green and gold. They wander through the streets of the town centre like a sacred procession. But there’s nothing particularly religious about it; the members of the Brotherhood are very approachable and never miss an opportunity to share their knowledge with young and old alike.

Tasting time

After a morning spent wandering about, it’s now time to settle down and catch our breath. Delicious smells lead us into a large marquee. There, everyone is busy serving the Foire aux Grenouilles’ signature dish: frogs’ legs.

Under the watchful eye of the Guild members, volunteers are cutting, skinning and cooking them. Everyone gives it a go, young and old alike. And there are frog’s legs in every possible sauce to suit every taste! They melt in the mouth… You barely need to chew before the leg has already gone down. Do watch out for the small bones, though, as they might get stuck in your throat!

We continue our exploration of the stalls at the Frog Fair, basking in the sunshine and the lovely Vosges weather. We come across people of all ages, who’ve come to sample the frogs or enjoy the fairground stalls. After having had a look round and taken part in a few activities and games, we leave the weekend’s event behind us to set off and explore the spa park.
