Come and live in Vittel

The magic of the festive season

Fancy being amazed?

Vittel is the place to do just that. Street performances, magic shows, ice sculptures, a Christmas market, decorated shop windows, illuminated streets, a St Nicholas parade, concerts, fireworks… and… Father Christmas and his elves!!!! Our children dragged us along to this programme, which we absolutely loved!

A feast for the eyes

This weekend, we’re going to enjoy some magical moments as a family!

Fireworks displays, Saint Nicholas (and Père Fouettard), a Christmas concert, ice sculpting, a Christmas market, a visit from Father Christmas, we’d been told about the many events planned in Vittel during our stay, so the children had already drawn up a schedule for the weekend to make sure we didn’t miss a single moment of the magical atmosphere that awaited us!

Wrapped up warm in our coats and scarves, we arrived to admire the shop window displays along the high street, which was beautifully decorated for the festive season. The lights delighted the children (and us too!). The scent of mulled wine and spices filled the air; we were close to the Christmas market set up in Badenweiller Park, which we’d visit later. For now, we were looking for the best spot to watch the parade that was about to start. It was a fabulous spectacle that the children were absolutely determined to see.

We’ve taken our places, and like us, many onlookers have done the same. Already the first notes of music are ringing out, and in the distance the troupe comes into view. It’s magical – you can see the wonder in everyone’s eyes! As they move forward, the crowd forms a procession behind them and follows the troupe, applauding all the way! It’s truly dazzling!

The Legend of Saint Nicholas

According to the legend of Saint Nicholas, the saint is said to have brought three small children back to life who had come to ask a butcher for shelter. The butcher had taken them in but, whilst they were asleep, had cut them up into pieces and put them in a salting tub.
Seven years later, Saint Nicholas, passing by, asked the butcher to serve him this seven-year-old salted meat.
Terrified, the butcher fled, and Saint Nicholas brought the children back to life.

The Christmas market

That wonderful show has whetted our appetite. We’re now heading to the Christmas market. Amidst all the mouth-watering smells, we set out in search of food to discover the local specialities. The children will have a waffle and a hot chocolate, whilst we’ll treat ourselves to some lovely mulled wine and biscuits. We take the opportunity to admire the ice sculptors set up next to the chalets.

The chalets have some lovely things on offer, and we decide to do our Christmas shopping here: a jar of honey here, a bar of soap there, some jewellery over there, or even locally made crafts – that’s very important to us!

We head back to our hotel, our bags and stomachs well and truly full, ready for a good night’s sleep before tomorrow, which looks set to be just as busy 🙂

But…

What do we see? Snowflakes swirling above our heads!! The children are over the moon and don’t want to go back inside!

Another equally magical day

We set off on our second day after a lovely night’s sleep; a very light dusting of snow makes the atmosphere even more enchanting!

We decided to head off to enjoy the spa park. It was still quite early; we passed a few joggers and cyclists, and discovered the magnificent spa gallery and its various springs. Vittel is steeped in history… the walk was truly soothing, the setting peaceful – we felt completely re-energised!

This afternoon we’re enjoying a magic show at the Palais des Congrès, and to round it all off, we’ve got a date with… Father Christmas himself!!! The children and we can’t wait!
