At the end of Rue Fort Julien stands a huge stable. In front, a few bales of hay. In the car, the children are getting impatient and want to see the animals. We try to calm them down, but their enthusiasm infects us too, and soon we’re encouraging the driver to step on the gas and drive the last few meters.

The children rush out of the car and take off running. They’d been waiting for this visit to the farm. To spoil them, we decided to make two visits: the morning one and the afternoon one.
And who says two visits also says two transformation workshops to choose from: butter, flour, apple juice, cow’s milk soap, felted wool keychain or natural modeling clay. The choice is vast, but the children have already decided: it’ll be butter this morning, and modeling clay for this afternoon.
So off we go to meet the farm animals. The children are shy of the cows, but the calves and other small animals overcome their mistrust. Soon, tongues are wagging and questions are being asked about the animals, as well as about what it’s like to be a farmer. Once the tour of the farm has been completed, and the children’s curiosity satisfied, it’s time to make our own butter. With expert guidance, the clumps of butter take shape before our amazed eyes.
For lunch, we stay with the farmer theme, with a picnic enhanced by local produce. The kids are chatty as magpies, and eager for a second tour. We take time to savor our local produce before heading off again for a tour of the farm.
On this second tour, all the children’s shyness and reticence is gone. Even we’re getting in on the act. The modelling clay workshop is just the thing to make us fall back into childhood. We mix the ingredients with our hands, add coloring, knead and bolt the dough into small pieces. The greediest of us try our luck, but are quickly dissuaded. By the way, it’s almost time for our farm snack, and stomachs are starting to make their desire to taste our lump of butter felt.

To round things off, and not eat our butter alone, our hosts bring us bread, honey, but also jam and cocoa. To refresh us, local syrups come to flavor and sweeten just right the water we drink.
A real invitation to come and discover all the regional products on offer in and around Vittel. While we finish eating, we watch our hosts milking the cows. Even so, the milk looks appetizing and tasty. Who knows? Maybe we’ll find it on our breakfast table tomorrow morning…
